Ron,

: Should I run the 803s full range or cut them off at 40hz and let the sub pick up the rest?

What is the bass extension on the 803s? You should determine this first. Get a test CD with LF test tones, turn the sub to none, and see how low they go before they audibly drop off. Also check for any signs of protest like distortion or buzzing. Give them plenty of volume--you want to be sure they can handle sustained LF over time.

Compare the same test tones and other bass-heavy material through the sub vs. the 803s and see if the quality of bass (tighter, better pitch definition) is any better or worse.

All things being equal, crossing over to the sub gets more efficiency from the 803s, because it removes the LF demands from speaker and amp, which frees resources for the mids and highs. Only if the 803s sound significantly better should you consider running them full range, and only if you have an amp with power to spare.

Good luck,
Philip Brandes
