mc1 trade in program

The late Bert Whyte, the Rane Corporation et. al. have observed that the average ambient noise level in the home and auditorium is about 40 dB SPL. Then to exploit even the lowly 16-bit word length's 96 dB dynamic range, you'd have to drive your audio system to peaks of 136 dB SPL, dangerously close to the 140 dB SPL level associated with irreparable damage to hearing. Even if 136 dB SPL were tolerable, how much hardware today could reproduce this level. Assuming a speaker with sensitivity of 90dB SPL, you'd need an amp with at least 40,000 watts of peak power to achieve this level (assuming no speaker compression or gross speaker distortion). Yes, I know that stereo implies 2-channel reproduction, but that is scant relief. And remember, we're only talking 16 bits here. Jim
