Simply put, a front to rear surround pan will be moved through the side channels by increasing and/or decreasing the amplitude of that particular channel, akin to Dolby Pro-logic steering. It's nigh-on impossible to explain here in the amount of detail found in Dr. David Griesinger's AES papers - you can order them from the AES web site. Link below.
