DC-2 and Citation Dual Drive Surrounds

The 6-AXIS mode of my 7.0 sounded great in this configuration. I just got my MC-1 a few weeks ago and have spent some time exploring its surround capabilities. It is very similar to the 7.0 in its surround customization capabilities, and actually easier to play around with in that respect. As far as listening to stereo or matrix sources, I would have to say I have probably captured the 6-AXIS sound in my room to about the 90% level using my existing 7.3's in DD mode. The differences at this point I think are fundamental to the way the two processors derive and steer the surround information. With my setup, 6-AXIS seems to have a more enveloping sound to me, and there is definitely more information going to the surrounds. I didn't really acurately compare the specific information in the side/rear speakers, since I could not do a direct A/B switch without disconnecting & reconnecting all the cabling (a real PITA). My conclusion so far is that I'm ok with my setup the way it is. I will get used to the sound of the new surround modes just like I did for 6-AXIS. I personaly like to listen to music in the surround modes and that's why I loved 6-AXIS and that's what I've played around with the most. I've heard from a few others (see previous posts on this forum) that they think the separated speakers definitely make a difference over the DD's, and so I am strongly considering getting some small speakers and trying separate rears (setting my 7.3's to dipole or bipole mode). It certainly seems reasonable and likely that separate rears would provide a more spacious surround effect, probably for either processor. I would say that if it was easy for me to do I would certainly go for it now with the MC-1. But, also like you, I am very limited in what I can do in this respect and not sure it will be optimum and therefore worth the pain. Hope this helps a little in making your decision. For me, it came down to asking myself which company I believed would be in this business for the long haul and be responsive to their cutomers, fix problems with their products, and stay on the cutting edge with timely new products. Suffice to say Citation did not make that cut. Allen
