Hi Garmt,

Congratulations on your purchase and my compliments on doing your homework on Bass Enhance before your DC-1 even arrives. You ask some good questions.

: My question is this: do you also have to route all the LFE to the side speakers and set subwoofer to OFF? Or isn't this part of Bass Enhancement?

Setting sub to NONE in the system-wide Speaker Configuration menu will automatically route the LFE to the fronts. With fronts set to small, Bass Enhance will then route all bass below the front crossover to any large speakers (sides).

: I was planning to split the subwoofer output with an Y-connector and use the unfiltered low-level inputs on both REL's for LFE only.

This is unnecessary as LFE is already routed to your sides with the sub set to NONE, as described above. You could get your idea to work, but it's better to let the Lex handle all the phase and timing issues in the digital domain.

: In this way, the 805's won't be overdriven by too much bass.

That depends on how you plan to handle the DC-1's side outputs. If you're thinking of using the REL's ABC connection that feeds off the high-level amp signal, I wouldn't recommend it. This would send the full range signal to your side 805's, including the rerouted LFE--too much for them to handle without protest.

To avoid overloading your sides, you need to high-pass the side outputs between the DC-1 and your side amp/speakers. You'll need an external crossover for this, since the Q100E has no high pass outputs. To further complicate things, you can't defeat the Q100E's internal crossover, which means you'll be cascading or crossing over the sub signal twice, which can introduce phase anomalies. I think the best way to minimize potential problems with this configuration is to use the lowest external crossover setting your 805 sides can comfortably handle, and set the REL's crossover as high as it can go to 140 Hz (set the Coarse and Fine knobs to "4").

: Does anyone have comments on this configuration? I am not familiar with all the settings of the DC-1, as I don't own it yet. I am just thinking in advance to make sure I make the best possible choices.

Your setup with large sides/all others small is the right place to start. Set the front and rear speaker crossovers according to the 805's range (40 if they can cleanly go that low). Also, set the center crossover higher at 120 hz.

This will make a great-sounding system. Have fun!

Cheers,
Philip Brandes
