I actually agree with you on this. Full range sides are much harder to place and far more obtrusive (if they're truly full-range, they'll have sizable woofer cabinets which makes wall palcement problematic.

Sat/sub configurations give you the most flexibilty-you can set the mids/tweets at your preferred height independently of the subs.

Shielded RCA cables are available in long lengths, and they don't have to be "audiophile" for sub frequencies.

If you're looking at THX designs, make sure they offer full high frequency extension-many THX speakers roll off the highs per older Pro-Logic specs, and aren't suitable for 5.1 formats.
