Hi Philip:

Thank you for the comments.

I probably should have qualified my statement to say that
"part" of the dipoles effectiveness lies in reflected sound
from the front.

My understanding of dipoles has always been that the null created
by the out of phase drivers served primarily to keep one from being
being able to localize on the speaker and that the reflected sound
component served to envelope the listener. The fact that dipoles
specifically direct sound to the front of the room led me to believe
that these reflections were a crucial element of the design. This apparent misunderstanding
(smearing of the front image) has led me to shy away from dipoles.

If what you say is true it is good news for me. I have been enlightened.

Is it then also true that dipoles will still function effectively in an acoustically dampened enviroment?
How much absorption can, or should I realistically use throughout the room (I'm not going to overdamp it)?

Finally, why would you have reservations about using this set-up for music, other than screen induced roll-off of the top-end (which I entend to re-equalize)? Also, I will most likely employ a retractable screen for music listening. Please advise.

Regards,
Doug
