You're still getting most of the sound from dipoles directly from the drivers--think of it as listening off-axis. The null from the phase cancellation is what contributes the "diffuse" sound.

If your screen is retractable that will control the roll-off, of course. I have never heard the Atlantic Techs, so my caution is based on more general experience that THX systems tend to sound (to my ears) somewhat harsh for music. What's important is how it sounds to you, I'm just recommending that you audition most critically with music--if it sounds good there, it will sound good for movies, but I don't think the reverse is necessarily true.
