I like the way it is. It was so transparent to me that I had to think for a few moments to figure out what you were talking about. To me, it's like putting the DC-1 into a volume-change mode, for example, so I knew it would be changing its volume, and the delay wasn't noticeable. If I wanted to make gross adjustments, I'd just hold down the key, and the volume would change quickly. If I wanted to make fine adjustments, the initial display would show me where I am, and then I'd inch it up or down. I'm assuming here that the heart of the argument will come down to whether you should change the volume, and that it's obvious the effects should stay the way it is.

Perhaps it could be configurable from the menus somewhere if this issue were really divisive?

But I like vi's interface, so what do I know about GUIs? :-)
