Stuart,

I think Ken is referring to the way it works in pre-V3, where you could assign the effect of choice to any ACCY+INPUT key on the remote.

Many folks thought this programming was stored in the remote when it was really done at the DC-1 end--the remote always sent out exactly the same code for each key.

I think the confusion here is that, as you say, with V3 the whole effect selection process works differently--there is a dedicated key for each effect, which cannot be changed. Thus you're always stuck using a Shift+Key combination for Music Surround (though this really isn't any harder than having to use an ACCY+Input Key combo).

So Ken, the answer is no you can't assign effects to keys any way you want, but you can still select your effect of choice, and for the main 8 effects it's simpler because you don't have to hold down a modifier key--just push one button.

Hope this helps,
Philip Brandes
