I am constantly using the "display" of the volume before making any adjustments hence I prefer the functionality as it is installed. When watching movies with guests, I am periodically adjusting the volume based on the movie content (I use the DC-1 display and not the on-screen display) and it is very convenient to know the volume setting before adjusting so that I can return to that same setting at a later time.
