Brian,

: I can feel a flame war starting... but, how important is build quality anyways?

You raise a very good issue...I'll keep a fire extinguisher handy, though hopefully it won't come to that!

: Why should I care if the Lexicon feels light when I don't plan on picking it up once it's installed in my system? Why would I care if somebody could easily knock it around, when I plan to have it well out of the way of where people are walking?

I agree 100%. I'm looking to use my Lexicon as a surround processor, not a football. Personally, I'm a functionalist--I think the unit should be solid enough to withstand its intended use.

While the DC-1 was acceptable in this regard, I think it had some limitations expecially in environments with lots of cable swapping (the I/O jacks seemed like its weakest link). The more solid jacks on the MC-1 are very reassuring (I haven't seen a DC-2), and the MC-1's sheet metal case is certainly more substantial. And the MC-1 display is more readable at different angles.

While there may be some basis for factors like vibration dampening, like you I think some of the units out there are way overbuilt. My personal preference is to see the money go into the components that affect sound quality.

Still, for some people aesthetics is a factor at this price range. Lexicon units are never going to win any beauty contests, compared to very stylish containers from the likes Theta and EAD.

But really Lexicon's forte isn't cutting edge hardware--it's their unique software where I feel I'm getting the real value for my money.

Regards,
Philip Brandes
