The specs you gave are probably the -3db points on your speakers. IOW, that is the point where you speaker is already rolling off the sides info.

By high passing them above this point you reduce strain on them, save amplifier power and they should be able to play louder before overloading.

My sides, center and rears are rated to 35-40hz... I high pass them at 120hz and let the Lexicon redirect the bass to my mains above 40hz (which each have a sub) and below that to the sub on my sub out.
