DTS upgrade only

Using Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 5.0; Windows 98; DigExt):

Hi,

can anyone tell me if I buy a dc-1thxac3 (software version 1.xx)without dts, then upgrade it to dolbyEX with software version 4, do I still have to buy the full dts upgrade with software version3.1? at $500. Or can I just buy the card at a cheaper price?
