I recently upgraded from 2.1 to 3.1, and to be honest, I cannot tell much of a difference. HOWEVER, I am not presently using the system to its fullest (5.1 instead of 7.1, no side subs for bass enhance, etc.), so I cannot say that it was all for naught. Many people on this forum have heartily recommended the upgrade. At least you get another remote!
