How to prevent a fire

Hello.

I know this is a non Lexicon question, however I also know that there are very technical contributors to this board and would appreciate your advice. Please forgive the off topic post.

I just heard about some guy's house that went on fire. He was a big collector and lost thousands of dollars worth of irreplacebale stuff.

A fire was supposedly started in the basement due to an overloaded extension chord.

I currently have a color TV and DSS Receiver hooked to 2 connecting extension cords because the wall socket is on the other side of the basement. And I have my stereo attached to this socket via one extension cord.

I would like to take proactive steps to prevent any fires. Besides adding another wall plug, what else can I do or buy to make it safer? Will one of these sophisticated surge protector type devices help? Anything else?

Thanks,

Dave
