Hi Dave:

Absolutely get rid of the extension cords and have an electrician install a proper dedicated circuit(s) to your equipment. It doesn't sound like you have a large current draw, but extension cords are just bad news.

By the way, surge protectors will not protect against an overloaded extension cord. They are not designed for that. They can however, be very effective against line surges and spikes. EMI/RF filters can also be effective against some forms of AC noise.

The other thing to look into would be a Balanced Power supply. At first I was a bit skeptical, but I recently heard a demo and was impressed. They can be very effective at lowering the noise floor and increasing dynamic range. But commercially available ones are very expensive. I am installing a balanced power system for my new home theater, but I am using custom wound toroidal transformers that are much more affordable.

More info on balanced power can be had at www.equitech.com

Regards,
Doug
