Serial numbers are not accessible to the software. How would this prevent someone from installing pirated or borrowed software to which they were not entitled? There is no way it could be checked at installation.

The point of the EEPROM approach to copy-protection is not to catch people violating it, it's to prevent unauthorized use by making it harder than a simple software download. I'm not saying it doen't make upgrades less convenient, but given that's Lexicon's position it's something i think we'll have to live with.
