How to avoid the EX upgrade cost

Not to belabour the point, but couldn't the 'upgrade software' read a factory implanted serial number stored within the Lexicon unit during assembly. After all, there is a lot of code stored in the units now. In other words, each unit would be electronically stamped at manufacture. The serial number on the case would be irrelevant to the upgrade process. I really don't think this is rocket science, but maybe I am missing something that is not obvious to me.
