If Lexicon used your suggestion (implanting a serial number), then the destination of every unit, not just to the dealer but to the individual customer would have to be known. When upgrades come along, then the specific upgrade would have to 'find' the specific processor. I can foresee a lot of red tape in that exercise. Moreover, everyone would have to wait for their individual EP-ROM as Lexicon would not be able to simply produce a volume of unspecified inventory. More red tape.
