Derived EX?

Hi Shelly, Surround EX does not specify a center rear channel for home use (it's different from EX theater specs). It specifies a pair of rear speakers, although both receive the same mono signal. The actual Surround EX processing involves matrix encoding/decoding a la Pro-Logic. It is designed to operate on EX-encoded material, giving the soundtrack engineer precise control over the rear channel content (as opposed to leaving it up to the Logic 7 processing). Although EX can be applied to 2-channel sources, my understanding is the results are very unpredictable, and counterproductive more often than not. It certainly does not attempt to correlate steering effects with the content of other channels, the way Logic 7 does. Until we get our hands on the upgrade and some software, it's really hard to evaluate the relative benefits of EX processing. Hope this helps some, BTW - did you ever settle on a solution for your sides (still envious of your all-Gallo Nucleus front/rear setup)
