Actually my DISH system downloads system upgrades and new features from the satellite stream without any intervention at all - automatic upgrades. The phone jack is used to call the billing department for any PPV movies only (I don't even have mine plugged in as I rarely ever order).

I agree with the ideas proposed - there just HAS to be a better way in 1999/2000 than old fashioned EEPROM updates. I'm sure lexicon has obviously thought about this before but I think it would be a real selling point for the unit for home useage and I think in time they'll have to do it to stay competitive as more and more of the competition have software based upgrades.
