Lexicon vs. MX132 vs. Reference20
Posted by Aaron Gilbert [IP: 216.65.153.9] on August 30, 1999 at 22:35:42 Greetings! I'm delighted to have found this forum, and have already spent hours reading up on the Lexicon processors, and the existence of such a forum will significantly effect my final decision. My purchase of a new processor is still several months off, perhaps longer, but I do all my research well in advance. I've been looking at all three of the Lexicon processors (leaning definitely more towards the MC-1) in addition to the McIntosh MX-132 and Reference 20. The B & K unit isn't a strong contender however, due to the lack of THX processing. For the money though, it provides a lot of bang for the buck and a much longer warranty than the Lexicon (not sure on the MX132 but I think it's at least five years?). The MX132 is priced similarly to the Lexicon, but has nearly 50% more inputs and outputs (analog and video at least) It also has the most extensive set of options for home automation, multi zone and external controls that I've ever seen. My only reservations about this unit is the limited amount of surround options (the same can be said for the B & K). While just normal DD5.1 or DTS5.1 can be spectacular, and THX in each mode even better, I'm gathering the opinion that the Lexicon Logic7 is a leap above, not even counting the Bass Enhancement feature. There are a few possible problems which hopefully someone can address as far as the Lexicon units. 1. When playing a DTS CD on a changer and the digital input is set to Auto, will it revert back to PCM when the changer switches back to a standard CD? (Several high end receivers will _not_ play the standard CD after playing a DTS disc until you reset the digital input - defeating the purpose of the changer) 2. What is the warranty on the DC-2 and MC-1? 3. This is not specifically Lexicon related, but comes up because the MC-1 only has two record outputs (DC-2 only one?!), almost all receivers have four. I don't understand this, as two VCRs are almost a must, leaving you no outputs for MD/CD-R/RW/etc. It's easy to find a device that will give you more inputs, is there a device (other than a Y splitter) which will do the opposite? I won't even get into the BE features, I'm trying to make sense of the past six months of posts on this forum still and I have the MC-1 owners manual. I'm still planning to use an Audio Control Phase Coupled Activator with however many subs I end up using (probably two or four), but the issue is further complicated (though in my mind it's simplified) by my home theater room having no modes. Figure out the shape of that room. :) Sorry to ramble on, thank you to anyone who's had the patience to read through all this! Thanks in advance to anyone replying also. Anyone who's had personal experience with either the Reference 20 or the MX132 as well as a Lexicon unit, I'd love your opinion! Cheers, Aaron Gilbert
