VR2090 vs. TXDS656 vs. AVR65 Posted by Anonymous [IP: 152.173.42.153] on October 27, 1998 at 12:57:07: In Reply to: VR2090 vs. TXDS656 vs. AVR65 posted by Floyd on October 27, 1998 at 05:07:08: Personally, although I think the Kenwood is a nice piece of equipment feature-wise (save the remote -- but even that is kind of kool in its own way), I fear that Kenwood just doesn't make a solid piece of equipment. One thing to consider, for example, is that this is the best Kenwood offers. In the similar price range, if you can get Harman Kardon or Yamaha -- real audiophile manfucturers -- I would tend to trust them a bit more. While this is not to suggest that everything Yamaha or HK make is superb, it does suggest that this level of equipment that you are considering represents only part of what they are capable of (and I think that may translate into better equipment at this level) -- as for Kenwood, so far as I know (and I know I'll be corrected if I'm wrong), the 2090 represents the best they can (or are willing to) do. I know that this is bound to start some turf wars, but that is not my intention, so go easy. Take a look at the power supplies, too -- it seems Kenwood could have put a heftier one in there. All in all, I don't think you'd necessarily be disappointed with any of these receivers, but as far as bang for buck goes, personally, I'd resist Kenwood -- decent features, but how durable is it? Also, I believe the new Yamaha that is coming out has discrete circuitry, whereas I do not believe that the Kenwood does (again, could be wrong, and I'm sure I'll be corrected if I am). One last point (and you may take it with however many grains of salt you wish -- that the brown ac...oops), I know of at least one local store that stopped carrying Kenwood because it did not live up to what they would expect from audio equipment that they sell. OK, enough for my $.005
