Bob,

Dolby Pro-logic is actually a fairly simple process compared with Dolby Digital or DTS, but in its own way it is complex, the most important part of which is producing the signal dominance vector used to steer events.

However, just as with Dolby Digital, Pro-logic is carefully controlled and licensed by Dolby Labs. There are minute differences in how Pro-logic is decoded, but you will not hear more information from a good decoder than a bad one. What you will hear are errors in the way the bad decoder steers the signals.

So, in short, you're not going to get any more information from a Denon Dolby Pro-logic decoder than any other and, after years of development there really aren't any bad decoders around. The chips are easy to produce and appear even in budget components.

The output from a Dolby Pro-logic decoder can be passed through 'DSP' modes and these can create additional soundfields. There are very complex algorithms developed by Lexicon and Meridian, and there are the Yamaha modes which do offer a lesser degree of enhancement. Denon's 'DSP' modes are not on that level however, they're fairly crude.

Stuart.
