VR2090 vs. TXDS656 vs. AVR65 Posted by Joe [IP: 152.171.89.94] on October 28, 1998 at 02:16:11: In Reply to: VR2090 vs. TXDS656 vs. AVR65 posted by SMR [WizOp] on October 28, 1998 at 01:26:43: I agree...yes, I think that DVD Audio will present a real (and perhaps insurmountable) challenge to DTS. Naive questions: To what extent will DTS be compressed on DVD's in comparison to DD? Isn't it considered to deliver higher resolution because it isn't as compressed? or is it the sample-rate? (what is the rate for each, anyway?) Someone I spoke with suggested that it will be compressed more on DVD than it is on LD. This person also suggested that this was a lossless bit-for-bit compression/decompression, which I found a little difficult to believe, but I'm no expert. Know of any websites that answer these kinds of basic questions? :But 5.1 music will survive and flourish in these other formats, formats which should quickly become widespread and have a large catalogue of software. Despite having invested in dts equipment, I will be glad to see a 5.1 audio format take off even if it is not dts. : Unfortunately DTS doesn't work that way. It's likely that all those people who get DTS equipment this Christmas will be just as disappointed as those last year who were promised software… in January at the CES. Then sometime in February. Then in March, September, November…. Fingers crossed on behalf of DTS fans for the holiday season! Word on the street, as I've heard it, is that DTS encoded DVDs will almost certainly NOT be on the market by Christmas, but that they have committed fairly firmly to January '99 (of course, given the history here, such commitments must be taken with a few grains or distilled grains...;) Have you heard similarly? Peace,
