VR2090 vs. TXDS656 vs. AVR65 Posted by SMR [WizOp] [IP: 195.232.120.87] on October 29, 1998 at 15:01:33: In Reply to: VR2090 vs. TXDS656 vs. AVR65 posted by Johnny on October 29, 1998 at 14:52:47: Johnny, : But why, at this late date, would companies like H/K, Kenwood, and SONY of all companies add these decoders if they didn't believe that there would be software available for it. Good question. Apart from it being very easy to add DTS (same decode engine as Dolby Digital) and inexpensive, I think manufacturers are including it within their processors simply as a marketing tool. Yamaha has DTS, so everyone else must if they wish to compete. Look at the messages on this board, many people mention a product and then add… "But it doesn't have DTS". These people probably haven't heard the format, own no software but are still of the opinion that it may, sometime in the future, be important. Manufacturers have to listen. If H/K don't sell as many receivers because "They don't have DTS" then they'll add it, just so they sell more boxes. Speculation of course, but even with all these new decoders out there DTS still can't come up with DVD software. For any format to succeed, there must be software and hardware, preferably software first. DTS marketing have always been fairly clueless and if they manage to survive I'll be amazed. I hope they do however, competition is always a good thing.
