: CDL,

: : This is just some FYI for anyone who would like to know it (which should be all of you!) THX and Dolby Labs are combining efforts to develop a new surround format called Dolby Digital - Surround EX.

: Not really news, we've been talking about this for some time, take a look at: Move over DD/DTS, there's a new format in town! from October 16th.

: : And the best thing about it is that an "SA-10" adapter will be available to upgrade.

: No, that is a professional theatrical processor from Dolby Labs., it is only available to theatres.

: It's also not yet known how (or if) EX will be decoded at home. The Dolby Digital bitstream could carry another discrete RC channel, or it could be matrix encoded into RL and RR as it is theatrically. Either way, it's fully backwards compatible so consumers shouldn't worry. We're unlikely to see (hear) it in the home until autumn/winter 1999 at the earliest anyway.

: Stuart.

: Didn't mean to suggest that you guys
didn't already know about it. Actually
I figured you probably did. Just
putting it out there for anyone who
hadn't read your previous posting on it
(like me). As far as the adapter, the
thx site didn't really explain that the
adapter was only for theatrical use. To
quote: "The Surround EX format is fully compatible with all existing 5.1 digital systems. It requires only the addition of a Dolby SA-10 surround adapter; wiring the speakers into left, right and center groups; and providing an additional channel of surround amplification."
