: Looking to purchase my AV receiver. I have 5 NHT superones and a panasonic DVD. I want a receiver that has DD and DTS... Would like to stay around $1000. I have looked at the Sony 30ES and 50ES. They seem good. Is it worth the extra cash for the 50ES for 20 watts more? I have a 14x18 room with a 55inch Mitsu TV, Do I need the more watts and will I notice it? The Yamaha 795 looks interesting but they are not out yet to test drive. Any idea when they come out?

As far as the 20 watts more, it probably won't make a noticable difference. You need to double the wattage each time to make a noticable difference in volume. Use this formula-> dB=10*logA/B where A=higher wattage of receivers to be compared, and B=lower wattage of the two. Example:If A=100 and B=80, then dB would=.97 The human ear needs an increase of 3dB to obtain a noticable difference in volume, .97dB falls far short of that. To hear a noticable difference in volume from a 80 watt output, you would have to step up to a 160 watt output.
Many amplifiers sound different from one another regardless of wattage. Some amps are just cleaner or warmer sounding than others depending on their design and arcitecture. 2 amps with the same power rating may sound entirely different to you, so base your decision on what "sounds best to you." I am not familiar with the the Sony line, but I imagine they are of the same amplifier design. One with simply more power than the other, so I don't think there would be any difference in volume or sound(unless the 30ES is only 10 watts).
