: CJ,

: : The human ear needs an increase of 3dB to obtain a noticable difference in volume…

: Not so. Listeners usually report that a 3dB increase is "twice as loud". The human ear can actually detect 0.1dB differences in volume. The remainder of your calculations are correct as is your conclusion.

: Everyone interested in this topic of how many watts are needed should read Brad Meyer's article on the main SMR Home Theatre site, the link to which is at the foot of this message.

:
: Stuart.

Don't want to disagree but that article states the following.
"An increase in level of 10 dB, which most listeners rate subjectively as "twice as loud", requires a tenfold increase in amplifier power."
and
"Going from a 50-watt/channel model to a 100-watt unit will increase the available output by only 3 dB, which is noticeable, but just barely -- assuming the amplifiers perform similarly within their ratings."
I may still be wrong,(I am just a novice in this subject)and if I am, do you have any other links or info that you would suggest reading to expand my knowledge on this new hobby of mine? Here is one that I have found:

Thanks, CJ
