I got one from them recently. It's the real thing, tho it was a 'general' model (i.e. not U.S., see more below). My first one arrived DOA (yes, amazing). I called, returned it, and Uncle's had a new one to me within a week. I wasn't thrilled about the bad one, but it happens, and Uncle's treated me very fairly (and will cover the return shipping charges of the dead one). The new one is wonderful and I'm ecstatic about it. I also recently got a Toshiba DVD player from them, U.S. model/warranty, etc. Yamaha makes it quite difficult to get the U.S. model A1 mailorder--I didn't have time to hunt more and I'm satisfied. Depends on what you want--don't shop mailorder if you're not informed about what the options are.

If you do a search on DSP A1 with AltaVista you will find (I did a couple of weeks ago) a Hong Kong distributor with prices for 1, 5, 10 etc. units. That's probably where my general model came from, I don't care. I also don't care that I paid many hundreds more cause I would rather have paid local retail than go thru the hassle of dealing with a DOA from abroad.

R.e. the general model: pluses: 4 voltages selectable (set it to 120 in US), can convert PAL<->NTSC signals, has a 10 language manual [:)]; minuses: no US warranty, plug isn't grounded. I liked the price, delivery to my door (UPS), and was able to avoid the local Yamaha sole distributorship (read: monopoly) vendor in my N.Va/DC area. [I am always amazed that it doesn't matter that these guys are the "rated best" stereo/AV store, that I've spent thousands there--they still give me among the worst service, poorest salesman intelligence, have baited and switched, etc. that I've encountered. pardon the rant.]
