I'll second Michael's admonition -- don't pay retail. If you like to shop for electronics, call around to liquidation stores, pawn shops, and used stereo stores. Spend a couple of weeks perusing ads from the big electronics discounters. Look for demo models. Don't settle for a cheap component--listen to it if at all possible, check the specs, look for low harmonic distortion. Many of the surround recievers from JVC etc. have poor fidelity. I recently purchased a demo Sherwood receiver/speaker package for $175 (down from $400) and found a demo Sherwood CD player for $160 that lists for about $350. The nice thing about demos is that they come with full warranties and most chains still offer their 30 day return policy.
