Reciever for $250??? [ Follow-ups ] [ Post Follow-up ] [ SMR Forum 4 - Surround Receivers, Processors and Amplifiers Archive 1 ] [ FAQ ] Posted by Eric Kuhner [IP: 131.252.251.62] on November 10, 1998 at 01:21:36: In Reply to: Reciever for $250??? posted by Joe on November 05, 1998 at 20:15:52: : I am limited to $250 to spend on a home theater reciever. I am looking at either the : JVC 718v : $229 : or : Pioneer VSX-D457 : $249.95 : I realize that $250 isn't alot, but that is all I can afford. So anyone have any other suggestions for under $250??? : Thanks much, I'll second Michael's admonition -- don't pay retail. If you like to shop for electronics, call around to liquidation stores, pawn shops, and used stereo stores. Spend a couple of weeks perusing ads from the big electronics discounters. Look for demo models. Don't settle for a cheap component--listen to it if at all possible, check the specs, look for low harmonic distortion. Many of the surround recievers from JVC etc. have poor fidelity. I recently purchased a demo Sherwood receiver/speaker package for $175 (down from $400) and found a demo Sherwood CD player for $160 that lists for about $350. The nice thing about demos is that they come with full warranties and most chains still offer their 30 day return policy. When you find something interesting, check the web for reviews or usenet for comments. Good luck!
