OnkyoTXDS747 videoswitching:degrades image?

Posted by Don Lindich on September 26, 1998 at 16:23:02:

I am considering purchasing an Onkyo TXDS-747 receiver to add Dolby Pro-Logic and Dolby Digital surround to my current high-end two channel audio system. I would plug my video sources (Echostar Dish Network, Toshiba M-782 VCR, and soon, a DVD player, which go into a Toshiba FST Perfect TV.) into the receiver, and connect the front preamp-outs into a two channel input on my preamp, and use the surround channels amplification that is present in the receiver to drive the surround speakers. Audio-only sources would remain in the stereo preamp as they are now.

My question is primarily this: two reasons I am considering this unit is I can get it for $600, and most importantly, I would like to get the video switching and dubbing capabilities, especially for S-Video. I have read and heard conflicting stoies on what this does to image quality, though. Some say that it will degrade the picture quality by running the video signals through the receiver's switching, others say it won't have a noticeable difference. Does anyone out there have any real-world practical results with this or any other pieces? Should I just switch through the receiver and not worry about it, or should I look for a separate switcher?

Please email me with feedback!
