Looking to by a receiver, what do I buy?

Hi all,

I am looking to buy my first receiver.
I currently have a 27" TV, JVC Stereo VCR and a RCA Digital Satellite system.
Now I want to get surround sound. I just need some advice on what to buy. I want a receiver that wont be obsolete in a few years. I would also like it to give good 'Bang for the Buck' if you know what I mean. If anyone has any ideas or suggestions for me, please make a quick post.
