: i bought the classic theatre--returned it. then the VAX series and returned it. they had two much distortion at like 50 watts from my pioneer receiver. so i finally found the 12 inch F series for 825 at UA's clearance. it was broke, so they sent it in for repaird for free. does anyone know if the F series is really good? i listen to rap with all bass turned up, or does anyone have any sub $1000 subs that deliver great performance? i use 16 gauge monster cable.

the best way to check a subs distortion is to use acoustic mucis that really goes down to the 20hz area. rap will always sound distorted since most of the signal is electric, and not acoustic. i am not a middle aged audiophile weirdo either. i love rock, rap and r&b. but if you wanna listen to rap, turn down the bass on the sub, or it'll sound like crap. rap has a very bloated mid range, and that's what sounds bad to you. the f-series velodynes are servo and SHOULD, not saying it will, but should have very, very low distortion. if you think it sounds bad, go and get another one from a reputable dealer who will sell you one that works. also, take a sampler of your favorite jams with you, so that you can tell what it sounds like on a good system. a consumer grade pioneer receiver like yours is not all that clean. try to step up to a pioneer elite or sony es, or harman kardon.tec... good luck!
