Sherwood R-945 - Optical Problems

Technical assistance required! I recently bought an R-945 and am using with a Pioneer K88 (4-in-one) DVD player. When using the optical connector for AC-3 discs the sound keeps cutting on and off. I have replaced the optical cable once and both the Pioneer and R-945 each once also and am still encountering the problem! Has anyone encountered this problem? Am I using the correct cable [IXOS TosLink marked for DVD use]. I was impressed with the write-ups for this unit but now I have my doubts...
