Adjusting equalizer on Sony 50 ES

Can someone suggest how best to adjust the equalizer on my Sony 50 ES. It seems that if I increase the gain on any particular frequency, it increases the gain on the other frequencies within the bass, treble or mid range. Also if I increase the frequency in the front bass, the bass is deeper which is opposite to what I was expecting. i.e. the lower the frequency the deeper the bass.
