I too own the 793. That flashing LED on the volume knob is indicating that you have muted the volume. If you were using the on-screen menu, the words muting would be flashing on your television. When you first hit the mute button by mistake, the front LCD panel on the receiver itself does state that muting is on. It only states it for 1 sec. though. This is also explained in the manual's troubleshooting section. It's a good idea to keep that manual very close till you master all the functions of your new receiver. You can turn the mute function off by simply pushing the mute button on the remote. There is no mute button on the front panel of the receiver. This was one of that receiver's down falls, but I can live with it.
