You have it right on the money! For audio only it really does not matter if you have Dolby Digital or Dolby ProLogic. The only "bonus" you might gain would be with a "AC-3/DTS ready" receiver where you would have 5 channels with their own inputs. This could be a cheap way to give you more channels as AC-3 ready receivers are selling as cheap as DPL models today. Remember you would need a source to control all 5 (or 4) channels if you buy it as an amp.

As for Technics vs. H/K, you will find the H/K to have a cleaner, "silkier" sound with more impact in the bass area.

If all you have going is a background system and are driving several speakers at low level, I recommend you be happy with what you have if it works for you.
