The R-V and the RX-V series are clones. The R-V series is the superstore, department store, mail-order series. The RX-V is the specialty store series. They have the 2 series so there is no direct competetion between the specialty shops and superstores. You know, with Best Buys price protection. The specialty stores usually sells right at retail because they are small and don't have mass sales, as the superstores do. The specialty stores also do not have price protection usually and don't have good return/exchange policies as the superstores have. This would give the superstores the edge in sales. The problem is that superstores hire unexperienced KIDS and cannot promote the product as a specialty store can. The specialty stores are the stores that promote and pass the word of the HiFi technology that Yamaha has. This is why there is 2 series so the 2 types of stores are not in direct competetion with each other. The superstore series also doesn't carry the higher, or more costly models because the masses can't see spending $1500 on a receiver when a Sony or Pioneer has the same features or specs, for only $800. The R-V1103 is the clone to the RX-V793, which has been discontinued. The new most affordable Dolby Digital receiver from Yamaha is now the RX-V595 or R-V905. This is the replacement model for the RX-V592 or R-V902. Now that Yamaha has a cheaper R-V series Dolby Digital receiver, they for some reason have seen fit not to offer a R-V replacement for the R-V1103. The R-V1103 was at the time, the most affordable Dolby Digital receiver in last years receiver line up. The model that replaces the R-V1103/RX-V793 is the RX-V795. They did not offer a clone of this receiver in the R-V series as before unfortunatly. The R-V1103 has great close out prices of only $600 at Sears and other stores. For only $100 more than the R-V905, it is a steal! I own the R-V1103 and found it to be the best performer for the money at near retail. The RX-V795 offers more features that are well worth the added $200. The 795 will sell at retail of $800 because so new. I only shop in real stores from an authorized dealer to retain the Yamaha warranty, not mail-order. I have also talked to a Yamaha engineer, and he confirmed the R-V1103 is the identical twin or clone to the RX-V793. Good luck.
