If you own a 656, help me!

I'm on the verge of taking the plunge with the 656. I just want to triple check everything.

1) The unit doesn't have S-video switching, but it DOES switch for the DVD and front-panel S-vid?

2) Does the on-screen-display work through the s-video?

3) The cooling fan... at the store it was annoying, going on and off literally every 30 seconds. Is it noticable?

4) Can you assign any of the digital ins to any input? (Can I make the CD optical or coax?)

Also- any other quirks???????? Help! I'm going crazy!
