Jaime,

: 1) The unit doesn't have S-video switching, but it DOES switch for the DVD and front-panel S-vid?

Exactly what S-Video switching do you need? I have a sample TX-DS656 at the moment and it switches the source Y/C input as I select inputs and I can also select the record out Y/C source.

: 3) The cooling fan... at the store it was annoying, going on and off literally every 30 seconds. Is it noticable?

Yes, I think it is very noticeable especially as it is really loud. It is my biggest annoyance. Onkyo always use fans on their receivers (unlike most other manufacturers). Instead, they should concentrate on an efficient heat-sink system and eliminate the noise.

: 4) Can you assign any of the digital ins to any input? (Can I make the CD optical or coax?)

Yes, you can.

Stuart.
