OK, if you were to listen to surround from a VCR for example, it would be an analogue source so there would be now way of inputting it to the Technics. As you've mentioned that people are buying analogue to digital converters, this affirms my conclusions (they're converting the outputs of the VCRs for example into a digital signal for the Technics).

It also answers my second question - the Technics must be able to perform matrix surround processing on a PCM digital input (from laserdisc for example). It does have a Dolby Pro-logic mode doesn't it?
