The Harman Kardon AVR 65 is a very nice receiver. It retails for $1299 but is not worth that price for the following reasons:
1) no phono preamp
2) limited s-video switching
3) limited digital inputs (Two I think)

However, it is well worth the $699 it can be had for brand new with warranty for the following reasons:
1) great sounding amp
2) excellent DD/DTS decoding with crystal chipset
3) nice looks and good build quality

The Sony 50ES retails for $1000 and can be had for only $649 brand new with a 5 year warranty.

Advantages of the Sony 50ES over
the HK AVR 65:
1) more s-video switching
2) more digital inputs
3) more features (IE. DSP modes, LCD remote
4) more power (100 watts X5 as opposed to 65 watts X5)

Disadvantages of the Sony 50ES over the HK AVR 65:
1) Amps in HK are more conservatively rated and thus power difference is minimal.
2) HK receiver is easier to operate
3) HK sounds better in 2 channel stereo (IE. Deeper, better soundstage

These are just my obersavations and they are open to your debate.
