First, DISCONNECT EVERYTHING from the receiver, except the speakers. If the hiss is still there, you have a "bum" receiver - get it repaired/replaced!

If the hiss disappears, plug-in your "peripherals" ONE ITEM AT A TIME until the hiss returns. The last device is the "snake".

Question: does this receiver have DIGITAL inputs (coax and/or optical)? if you have anything connected to those inputs, DISCONNECT the "digitals" and see if things quiet down. I vaguely remember reading that SOME digital devices have "noisy" outputs that, when fed to a decoder, result in "snakey" behavior. :)

Hope this helps. :)
