Del:

I am not familiar with the Yamaha models you are refering to, but let me venture and speculate that your DSP A-2070 is a two channel unit.If my speculation is correct, you still had to bring it up to five channels, in which case you had no choice but to add the DSP-E492.

As long as you have five or six discrete channels to which you can input the decoded AC-3 or DTS signal, you are DD/DTS "ready" whether the equipment says so or not. The only question is whether you will input the decoded signal into the pre-amp section or the amp section and this will determine what kind of signal processing, if any, you will be able to achieve. If your decoded signal is going into the amps, you would have to rely on your decoder in order to add any DSP as is the case with the EP9ES which has three DSP modes. OTOH, true DD/DTS ready equipment should let you input the decoded signal at the pre-amp where you can use the pre-amp's DSP and a plain vanilla decoder such as the SH-AC500D. The SH-AC500D should also work fine with the first setup if you don't mind the absence of DSP effects.

In my case, I will use the DSP-A1000 pre-amp to listen to music and for VCR DPL with the decoder in by-pass mode. For DVD and DD/DTS I will only use the decoder and the amp sections of the DSP-A1000 plus the additional amps I described previously. The additional amps simply provide power for a dual voice coil subwoofer and help step up the power of the DSP-A1000 rear surrounds as the original channels are only 25 watts. Except the front effect speakers which only work for DSP when listening to music, all the amps are working whether I am listening to music or DD-DVD. So as not to waste any available channels, I am setting up my system with four front effect speakers using the original rear surrounds with a Y splitter.
