DD with yamaha 995

Using Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 4.01; Windows 95):

Peasae help me! I have just hooked up a Yamaha 995 receiver with a Toshiba 3109 DVD player. DTS audio is spectacular (e.g Tina Turner in Amsterdam). But when in Dolby Digital mode I am not getting anywhere near the same level of bass output. When I flip to 2 channel I get full rich bass from my NHT sub, but back to DD and it goes thin. In summary bass is great in DTS and two channel, it's not there in DD. Any ideas why? Thanks for your help.
