Equalizer Usage

Remember when there were pre-out and amp-in terminals on the back of many receivers to insert an equalizer into? Or you could route all incoming sources through a tape loop to equalize the stereo signal. I want to do the same for a 5.1 signal. DD is supposed to be 5 equal power and frequency response channels, so I think they all need to be tailored to my speakers and room uniqueness. Why just the front main channels? Just like the passing of "continuously variable loudness" that was on Yamaha receivers (great feature). Now that we have surround these features are gone...too expensive?..or don't meet Dolby specs?...or?
