Equalizer Usage

The reason that equalizers and functionality to accomodate equalizers are so rare in home theater receivers may have something to do with the adverse affect that signals with such screwed-up phase characteristics might have on the surround imaging of the soundtrack. Some models, like higher Sony receivers, get around this by doing some parametric equalization in the digital domain (presumably without impacting phase at all). But you might say that that is not exactly as flexible as what a 10-plus-channel equalizer might be able to do. All this is even without the mention of all the added harmonic distortion, intermodulation distortion, and all sorts of added response characteristics that equalizers usually bring to the signal chain. These latter factors may be a better explanation for equalizers' general absence from the two-channel audio high-end.
