While these guys have a long chat about the relative upgrade paths for the Lex and the Proceed (;-)), let me put in a good word for the Meridian.

I own a Meridian 861, which I bought just before the 561 came out. However, I have since listened to it critically (while auditioning some new speakers), and did a side-by-side with the Lex and the Proceed, just for fun.

In my opinion, the Meridian is superior for music. Logic 7 is a great mode, but that's all the Lex really has over the others. The numerous soundfield modes on the Meridian are excellent, and different modes sound better with different music. On movie soundtracks, they were comparable - I thought the Meridian had better bass management features, for example, but each has a strong suit.

Meridian's weak point really is its interface, but once programmed by the dealer it's pretty easy. I will say, however, that the ability to hook up your laptop to it and configure anything you want, including software upgrades, is a great boost.

On expandability, all three units are somewhat limited, compared to a card-based unit like the 861 or Casablanca. But for currently available formats, all 3 are good.

As in all things, the real deal is to listen to the three of them with your favorite software. Don't listen to us - your ears know best.

Good luck.
